POSITION DETAILS:
NY Certified Family Peer Advocates have “lived experience” as the parent (biological, foster, adoptive) or primary caregiver of a child/youth with a social, emotional, behavioral, mental health or developmental disability. They receive training to develop skills and strategies to empower and support other families with similar experiences. They foster effective parent-professional partnership and promote the practice of family-driven and your guided approaches.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
- Model and educate families on self-advocacy and systems navigation.
- Assist clients in developing goals and objectives that are strength and needs based.
- Engage each client in weekly community-based activities to promote healthy lifestyles and
progress towards established goals.
- Document visits in detailed progress notes.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Must have lived experience as a parent or primary caretaker of a child who has utilized mental health, substance abuse, foster care, social services, and /or similar youth systems and be willing to speak about this experience. Provisional or Permanent Family Peer Advocate Credentials required (training available). www.ftnys.org
Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma, high school equivalency or a State Education Commencement Credential. Valid driver’s license, safe driving record preferred, and reliable transportation required.
