Full-time: 35 hours

Onondaga County is seeking Peers to contribute their expertise in providing essential business services to our provider organizations and customers. The Peers provide support for people in active substance use by providing advocacy and support, making connections to community services, including emergency rooms, hospitals, and community settings in Onondaga. The Peers will be involved in community efforts focusing on individuals who have overdosed or who show signs of a substance use condition. Peers are people who have had personal or family experience with drug use problems and the process of getting better. These positions are employed by the Substance Use Initiatives program in the Onondaga County Health Department.

In this role, you will be

  • Providing support for individuals in need of substance use and related services by building a peer relationship through dialogue and conversation.
  • Assisting individuals as they move toward care and recovery.
  • Partnering effectively with community providers, including but not limited to hospital social workers, medication-assisted treatment programs, social services, housing programs, and managed care supports.
  • Providing advocacy in acute situations.
  • Providing linkage, referral, and information regarding community providers.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with community provider organizations.
  • Effectively documenting contacts with users of the service.
  • Completing timely triage during times of multiple competing priorities.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Provide coverage for program activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED and two years human services or related field experience, or equivalent education and experience
  • Certified Peer Recovery Advocate (CPRA) at time of employment, or within one year of commencement of employment. New York State Certified Peer Specialist (NYSCPS) and/or Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) are encouraged and not required.

  • Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
