Position Summary:

To provide peer support services as part of a multi-disciplinary team to persons with substance use/mental illness disorders. Support clients in removing and/or overcoming obstacles in their recovery as well as to help limit the harm caused by addiction by providing linkage to wellness, education, and social programs in the community. Peer Recovery Support Worker will offer guidance and support to individuals struggling with addiction and their families; that inspires optimism and fosters hope that recovery is possible, all while promoting empowerment, self-determination, understanding, coping skills, and resilience.  Must be cleared to provide services at The Department of Corrections.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  

The Peer Recovery Support Worker position is responsible for ensuring a good client experience during substance use treatment. Peer Recovery Support Worker provides treatment information to clients, schedule appointments, maintain health records, refer to community resources and establish and support Wellness Recovery Plans. An essential component of this position is engaging collateral contact for holistic client care.

Under the general direction of the Director, Substance Use Services and/or their designees and within established EHS and departmental policies and procedures, the Peer Recovery Support Worker performs the functions set forth below. All duties and functions shall be carried out (i) in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, (ii) professionally and competently and in accordance with the generally accepted standard of care, and (iii) in accordance with all policies, rules and requirements of EPS and/or EHS, and all bylaws, rules and regulations and policies of the medical staff of Elliot Hospital as they may be amended from time to time.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • To provide individualized, ongoing guidance, coaching and

  • Assess health status and social determinants of health to include developing formal and informal community supports.
  • Assist patients by increasing social support networks of relatives, friends and/or significant
  • To work in cooperation with other providers, family members or significant others involved in the patient’s recovery plan.
  • To offer encouragement in times of crisis including but not limited to using his/her own experience of recovery to help others.
  • To advocate on behalf of patients with behavioral health issues to protect the client’s rights and to assist in reducing associated stigma.

  • To be responsible for understanding client’s rights policy and
  • Participation in staff training and development and serve on designated committees within the Elliot Health system.
  • Must maintain professional standards and observe the guidelines established within the Code of Ethics and Conduct.
  • Credentialing: Submits credentialing and re-credentialing information to the practice office manager within one (1) week of receipt of applications.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures including, but not limited to, infection control procedures, safety procedures, Universal Precautions, patient confidentiality and security policies. Ensures confidentiality of employee, legal, client/patient, budget and all company matters.
  • Participation in an HMO or other third-party payor, including Medicare, Medicaid, or any other state or federally funded health care program as determined by the Elliot.
  • Must be credentialed with Elliot Hospital and submit completed credentialing and re-credentialing information to Medical Staff Services within one (1) week of receipt of application.
  • Conduct intake, screenings, follow-up, and discharge interviews to assess patient needs and enroll them in the program.
  • May provide supervision of colleagues who wish to obtain certification of recovery support worker (CRSW).

Education Requirements:

High school diploma or GED

Must have Certification CRSW (Certified Recovery Support Worker).  Certification requires 500 hours on the job training

Experience in SUD or mental health peer recovery support is needed
