Peer-Led Alternatives Training: Peer Respites as a Non-Carceral Crisis Alternative
October 9, 2025 at 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM EST
Topic: Peer Respites as a Non-Carceral Crisis Alternative
Description: Peer support and crisis services landscapes are ever-changing, but community will always be our home. This session will be a presentation and facilitated dialogue about peer run respites as a non-carceral, peer-led crisis alternative. Crisis alternatives are at the heart of the larger historical peer support movement, grounded in civil and rights, collective advocacy and mutual aid practices. Participants will receive an introduction to peer run respite and its key elements, learn peer crisis support basic skills, and explore ways of practicing harm reduction and transformative mental health skills in their daily lives and immediate relationships, workspaces and within larger systemic and grassroots community-based advocacy.
Trainer: Nze Okoronta
The purpose of this training series is to offer an opportunity to members to learn alternative practices, approaches, and ideas, that are rooted in the refreshed mission and vision of the National Association of Peer Supporters. This will be a chance for members to learn more about the direction in which N.A.P.S. is moving, build skills and knowledge, and earn continuing education credits. Each training will last 90 minutes and will incorporate knowledge sharing, participant engagement, and more.
